An Overview of Symonds House

A Perfect Home Away From Home

Symonds house is a nursing home located in Linton – a village situated in the Cambridgeshire countryside. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside, residents are also able to stay connected to the City of Cambridge as it’s only 10 minutes away. The house, is a lovely 55-bedded red brick Grade II listed building that is situated within it’s own grounds.

We are able to cater to a wide range of care categories such as old age, Dementia, Cancer Care, Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease and more. Our care includes both residential and nursing care and is available to our residents 24 hours around the clock from our team of highly trained carers and nurses. Our aim first and foremost, is not only to make sure that all our residents receive the specialist care they require and deserve, but also to make sure they all feel at home. That is why we strive to be as flexible and accommodating as possible when it comes to the preferences of our residents.

We provide a variety of activities to cater to everyone’s interest. We know just how important activities are for our residents and therefore always have at least 2 activities on per day. Activities we have include:

Meet the Manager

“I have been the Care Home Manager at Symonds House for over 3 years now. During this time my mission has been to provide a loving, caring, friendly and homely environment for all our residents, with compassionate and passionate staff who treat everyone with respect and dignity. I believe that this has been achieved and together with experienced, qualified nurses who regularly undergo refresher training to ensure that their nursing skills are current we now have a fantastic team of staff. Our intention is to understand that we work in their Home, not that they live in our workplace.

We have four separate Units for residents with different abilities and needs. The same staff work consistently with the same group of residents so that consistency of good person centred care is delivered daily. The most important thing to most of our residents is that they receive the care that they need and that the staff respect their choices and wishes, and that they understand what is important to them as individuals. We do this by meeting with residents before they come to stay with us, by talking to their families and loved ones, and by gaining as much information as is possible before they come to stay. This process continues after admission with reviews and updates to care plans as further information is gathered and shared.

It is also important to ensure that residents do not lose their sense of purpose and that they achieve fulfilment in their day to day lives. We aim to ensure that this is addressed by encouraging their participation and independence in all daily activities to the best of their ability.”

– Julia Cleland, Home Manager

“My mother had an extended stay in hospital and could not return to her own home. In hospital she lost a third of her body weight in a matter of weeks, wouldn’t eat and was extremely distressed. She was discharged to Symonds House and within days was calmer and accepting food. Now, three months on, she is able to feed herself, and eats with relish. The staff at Symonds House, from the manager to those responsible for washing and cleaning, are unfailingly kind, friendly, professional, and efficient. The nurses and carers are affectionate to my mother, whilst remaining respectful. They are also hugely supportive to me. I had some very frightening days watching my mother deteriorate and it was hard to accept that she would need dementia nursing for the rest of her life. She couldn’t be in better hands. I never thought I would enjoy spending time in a nursing home, but there is always laughter and the staff are so welcoming. They genuinely care for and care about their residents.”
